Free Tax Preparation

A coalition of community organizations led by the Tulsa Area United Way is offering free tax preparation assistance to those who qualify.

Members of the coalition include the Tulsa Area United Way, Tulsa Community College, East Side Christian Church and Tulsa Dream Center. Trained volunteers are providing tax assistance at several locations across the region.

The program is an effort to reach the low to moderate income taxpayer who may be entitled to the federal government’s earned income tax credit or child tax credit. Due to a very high volume of individuals seeking assistance, preparation services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition, United Way partner agencies are offering tax preparation assistance, including LIFE Senior Services, which is offering assistance to those over the age of 60, and the Tulsa Speech and Hearing Association, which is providing help for those with hearing impairments.

The program was offered during the last 18 years by the Community Action Project of Tulsa County, which continues to serve as a partner in the new coalition. Last year, CAP volunteers prepared more than 14,000 tax returns, resulting in rebates of $28 million. The coalition is part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program coordinated by the Internal Revenue Service and offers free tax help to people who make $52,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

Earned Income Tax Credit
Many area residents may not be aware that they qualify for the federal government’s earned income tax credit, a significant tax benefit for those at a certain income level. Visit one of the free tax preparation locations to find out if you qualify for a potentially sizable tax rebate.

Experienced volunteers are needed for the 2015 tax season to help counsel clients in the preparation of their taxes.
