Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

The Tulsa Area United Way, in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service and other local organizations, assists families with free preparation of their income tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

This program helps local residents, whose household income is less than $54,000 a year, to access tax credits for which they are eligible, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Education Credit. The VITA program utilizes IRS-trained community volunteers to provide this free service to local residents.
VITA volunteers assisted more than 3,900 people in preparing and filing their 2016 income tax returns.

This valuable service needs volunteers now for the 2018 tax season.

Volunteers will receive free training that will enable them to provide this assistance to the community.

The training is offered both online and in the classroom.

VITA sites are open days, nights and some Saturdays so you can choose the schedule that works best for you!

  MEET OUR VITA VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers Joel, Byron, Garry, Sheila, and Harvey make taxes fun at East Side Christian Church by volunteering with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). This group shares a special bond of friendship that makes their time together more than a community service project. With some of them working together since 2003, this group has a spunky sense of camaraderie. Whether it’s telling a joke or helping put thousands of dollars back into the pockets of families, this tax team knows how to make the client smile.

Interested in volunteering your time and talent? Become a VITA volunteer and help us make a difference in our community. Site Coordinator, Byron says that “We are eager to help with training. Any questions that you might have, someone is there to help.”

INTERESTED IN BEING A VITA VOLUNTEER?

Larry has been a dedicated VITA volunteer for 10 years.
Let him answer your questions.

Do you have to be a tax expert to be a VITA volunteer?

“Absolutely NOT.  You just need to be comfortable with the computer, train on the software, and get ready to assist a whole bunch of great folks who definitely appreciate the service.”

What is the best part about being a VITA volunteer?

“Being with a team of volunteer preparers in the evenings or on Saturdays, all of us being intent on providing assistance to clients in a manner that is both efficient but also friendly.  This is an up close and personal type of activity.”

Would you recommend joining the VITA program as a volunteer?

“Certainly, and the earlier the better! Gaining this experience as well as gaining the skills in tax return preparation is a real plus, both professionally and personally. The training is excellent and the experience providing a service to others in the community is priceless.”

What have you gained from being a VITA volunteer?

“I have gained a better working knowledge of the Income Tax filing process – perhaps a skill that I can maintain and use going forward.  In addition, it is always good to meet others in the community who share a sense of volunteerism.”

What is your favorite memory of your time as a volunteer for VITA?

“The tears of sincere relief and joy that come when the burden of filing taxes turned out to be a financial windfall for a young family.”

What is something you think our community should know about the VITA program?

“If you can take advantage of this service, there is absolutely no reason to spend your hard earned money with fee-based tax preparation services.  The VITA program is available, efficient and provides the same level of quality service as with for-profit or fee-based services.  Don’t call them, just come see us!”
