Lessons from the Field & The Importance of Realistic Expectations
Lindsay’s experience, including her time at our nonprofit partner YWCA Tulsa, deeply informs her work.
“Working at YWCA was one of the most important experiences of my career,” she said. “To have those relationships with those women, really, really helped me develop as a leader.”
Her time at YWCA also gave her, as Lindsay said, “a real appreciation for folks who do social justice and advocacy work.”
Her nonprofit background helps her identify common hurdles for nonprofits, such as unrealistic expectations around fundraising.
“Most people want a fundraiser to get in and raise their salary in the first 12 months,” she said. “… Year three is the year in which actual fundraising starts to happen.”
Equity, Technology, and Authentic Relationships
While AI can be useful, Lindsay said, “It does not take the place of a real, authentic relationships.”
The foundation of successful fundraising, Lindsay said, is partnership and dignity.
“We fundraise through the framework where the donor is viewed as a partner,” she said. “We center hope and dignity and we invite donors to view their role not as like a saviorism piece. No, you’re giving this money to partner with these people so that they can accomplish what both of you feel is important.”
